#1: Work outside the Monkeysphere

The very first post to the new RevOne blog proposes a simple idea: work outside your Monkeysphere - or, as may be more (or less!) familiar to you, Dunbar's Number.

The Dunbar's Number theory suggests that there is a certain number of people with whom "one can maintain stable social relationships", and that anyone outside of that group is not empathised with (or hardly even seen as human...). This is said to explain why you can cry for days on end when your boyfriend stops calling, but remain dry-eyed after hearing that thousands have died on the other side of the world. Yup, you're not the only one who can keep on eating their dinner when those World Vision adverts come on, so, err, don't feel too bad?

Now, this theory is obviously just that, and RevOne doesn't aim to dispute its credibility, but rather to use it as inspiration for our very first good deed: that is, to do something that works outside of your existing monkeysphere. Ambiguous much? Elaboration ensues...

Think About It: How many things in your life are influenced by people that you've never met, or hardly ever talked to? Who delivers your newspapers? Who collects your trash? Who cleans your office or your classroom at the end of the day?

Take Action: Make life a little easier for someone that you don't usually communicate with. Ask the checkout girl how her day is going, or leave your office a little bit tidier than usual. Anyone that's had a rough day at work will tell you that just the smallest bit of kindness from a stranger can make a big difference.
